Distinguish Between New & Existing Email Addresses, Customers

We are in the process of creating a journey that has different messaging and cadence based on whether a qualifying contact is a repeat customer with a new email address, or a new customer with a new email address. Right now we are unable to identify these audiences, since the system has no way to tell if the email address is new to file. We'd like the ability to segment on whether email addresses are new vs. existing to database.

    Our setup has a first purchase date and a most recent purchase date. However, we are only seeing an email address modified date (which overwrites ongoing) and not email address add/opt in date in the system. How can we get an email opt in date added?
