Allow updating of relational table field values from within the program flow.

If a relational table's field values are to be used as flags to control program flow, it's often necessary to update flag values to indicate the status of the program flow or to control subsequent processing within that program or processing in other programs that relying on the same relational table.  At this time, there is no mechanism in place for updating table information as is in place for updating database field values (as when exiting a program).

How will this idea be used?

During program flow we can rely on queries to determine the paths processing will follow.  The problem is that the data in these tables is read-only from within an automated program.

In our situation, we have a master database which has been in use for years with many dependent queries and programs.  We do not wish to modify the "schema" of this database.  Instead we rely on relational tables, when possible, to extend the database.  Frequently we introduce products and programs for short duration tests and do not want to make changes to the database to accommodate these short-run use cases. Instead we have grown increasingly dependent on relational tables.  However using relational tables falls short when using the tables for the purpose flow control because we are unable to update the field values during automated program processing.  Once a table record has been loaded (e.g. when created via an API call), its values are static.

Expanding our current update profile action to include updates to associated relational table fields is something we will need to research. Thank you for the idea and we will continue to watch this post for votes.
